Nova Scotia Seniors Care Grant 2026: $750, Deadline Dec 1, Plus Every Other Benefit

October 30, 2026 · 8 min read

Your father lives alone in Truro on OAS and GIS, and every winter the oil bill eats the month. Nova Scotia has real help for that, but almost none of it arrives on its own. Each program has its own form, its own deadline and its own office, and two of the biggest deadlines fall in the next few weeks.

The short answer: A low-income Nova Scotia senior can stack the Seniors Care Grant ($750, apply by December 1, 2026), the Heating Assistance Rebate ($400) and, for homeowners on GIS, the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors (up to $800, postmarked by December 31, 2026). That is up to $1,950 this year. Seniors on GIS also get their provincial income tax refunded, the Age Tax Credit takes $1,000 off provincial tax when taxable income is under $24,000, and Seniors’ Pharmacare caps the copayment at $382 a year.

Every figure below comes from novascotia.ca or canada.ca, checked on October 29, 2026. Here is each program, what it pays and exactly how to get it.

Seniors Care Grant: $750, deadline December 1

The Seniors Care Grant pays $750 per household toward the services that keep someone living at home. It is the most useful program on this page, and the one with the tightest deadline: applications for this year close on December 1, 2026.

Your parent qualifies if they:

  • are 65 or older by March 31, 2027
  • have a household net income of $45,100 or less
  • own or rent their home, with their name on the title, the lease or a utility bill
  • pay for eligible services between April 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027

Eligible costs are broader than most people expect: home heating, snow removal, lawn care, cleaning, help with downsizing or moving, grocery and meal delivery fees, and health services such as eye exams, dental work, physiotherapy, massage therapy, foot care and hearing tests. Medical devices, prescriptions and the cost of food itself are not covered.

Apply online at novascotia.ca/seniors-care-grant, or call 1-800-670-4357 for a paper form. Only one person per household can apply. Keep every receipt, because the province audits some files and a receipt needs the date, the service, the cost and the name of the business.

Heating Assistance Rebate: $400 a household

The Heating Assistance Rebate Program pays $400 per household for the 2026-27 heating season. It will not cover a winter, but it covers a good share of one oil delivery.

Your parent qualifies based on their 2025 income:

  • Living alone: net income of $30,000 or less
  • Living with a spouse or others: combined net household income of $45,000 or less
  • Anyone receiving GIS or the federal Allowance qualifies regardless of these limits

Applications run from October 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 at harp.novascotia.ca, or on a paper form. The rebate takes about eight weeks to arrive. If your parent applies for the Property Tax Rebate below and ticks the heating box on that form, the heating rebate comes automatically without a second application.

Property Tax Rebate for Seniors: up to $800

If your parent owns their home and receives the Guaranteed Income Supplement, the province refunds half of their 2025 municipal property tax, up to $800. People aged 60 to 64 who receive the federal Allowance qualify too.

The 2025 taxes must be paid in full and in your parent’s name. Mail the application with the tax bill and receipt, postmarked no later than December 31, 2026, or drop it at any Access Nova Scotia centre. If the bill is lost, call the municipal office first; many will send the tax figures to the program directly. Questions go to 1-800-670-4357.

Once your parent has applied, the province can send next year’s form automatically, so this one gets easier after the first year.

Provincial tax relief: the GIS refund and the Age Tax Credit

Provincial income tax refunded for seniors on GIS

Seniors who receive the GIS and still pay Nova Scotia income tax get that provincial tax refunded in full. Nobody applies. The province works it out from the tax return and mails refunds twice a year, in August and January. About 19,000 seniors received one in the last round.

The only way to miss it is not filing. If your parent skipped a return, filing it late still brings the refund.

Age Tax Credit: $1,000 off provincial tax

Nova Scotia residents who are 65 or older by December 31 and have taxable income under $24,000 (line 26000) get a $1,000 reduction in provincial income tax. It is claimed on the NS428 form that comes with the tax return, and tax software fills it in. Check it is there, because it only helps if your parent owes provincial tax in the first place.

Affordable Living Tax Credit

The Nova Scotia Affordable Living Tax Credit pays up to $255 a year for a single person or a couple from July 2026 to June 2027. It shrinks by 5 percent of family net income over $30,000. The CRA pays it automatically every quarter to anyone who files a return.

Seniors’ Pharmacare: what prescriptions cost

Nova Scotia Seniors’ Pharmacare covers prescriptions for residents 65 and older who have no other drug plan. It has two costs:

  • An annual premium of up to $424, based on income. Seniors who receive GIS pay no premium, and lower incomes pay a reduced one.
  • A 30 percent copayment on each prescription, capped at $382 a year. After that, prescriptions cost nothing until the program year resets.

So the most a senior pays in a year is $806, and a senior on GIS pays at most $382. The program year runs April 1 to March 31, and your parent has to renew by April 1 each year. Enrol through the MSI online portal or call 1-800-544-6191.

Help staying at home

Home care through Continuing Care

Home care in Nova Scotia starts with one number: Continuing Care at 1-800-225-7225. A care coordinator assesses your parent at home and arranges nursing, personal care and home support. Nursing is free. Home support fees are based on household income. If you are weighing public hours against private help, our guide to what senior home care costs in Canada shows the private rates.

Caregiver Benefit

If you are the one providing the care, the Caregiver Benefit pays the caregiver directly. The province’s page lists $400 a month. The care recipient must have a high level of need, such as memory loss that affects daily life or a high risk of falls, and a household income in the lowest band of the home care income table. The caregiver must provide 20 or more hours a week of unpaid help.

Apply through the same Continuing Care line, 1-800-225-7225. The 2026 provincial budget cut the program’s funding by 20 percent, so ask about the current amount when you call. The benefit is taxable. Federally, the Canada Caregiver Credit can add up to $8,773 in claims on top.

Housing Repair and Accessibility Program

For grab bars, a ramp, a walk-in shower or an urgent repair like a failing roof, the Housing Repair and Accessibility Program offers up to $18,000: a $10,000 grant plus an $8,000 forgivable loan. Larger projects can add a repayable loan of up to $20,000.

It is for lower and moderate income homeowners. Income limits vary by county and household size, households with more than $25,000 in investment assets do not qualify, and the home must be worth no more than $360,000 in Halifax and East Hants or $280,000 elsewhere. For what the work itself costs, see our guide to aging-in-place renovations.

The federal layer underneath

Every program above sits on top of federal pensions. For October to December 2026:

  • Old Age Security: up to $762.50 a month at 65 to 74, and $838.75 at 75 and over
  • Guaranteed Income Supplement: up to $1,138.90 a month for a single senior
  • Next payment dates: November 26, then December 22

GIS matters twice in Nova Scotia, because it is also the key to the property tax rebate, the provincial tax refund, the heating rebate and a free Pharmacare premium. If your parent is not getting it, read our GIS guide before anything else. All the deposit days are in our seniors’ benefit payment calendar.

Your first four calls

If you only have one afternoon, do these in order:

  1. Apply for the Seniors Care Grant online or at 1-800-670-4357, before December 1.
  2. Send the Property Tax Rebate form if your parent owns and gets GIS, and tick the heating rebate box. Postmark by December 31.
  3. Call Continuing Care at 1-800-225-7225 for a home care assessment, and ask about the Caregiver Benefit in the same call.
  4. File every tax return. The GIS refund, the Age Tax Credit and the Affordable Living Tax Credit all depend on it. Our year-end tax checklist for seniors covers what to do before December 31.
